Position: Marin County Business Development Officer

About Working Solutions: Working Solutions (www.tmcworkingsolutions.org) is a mission-driven and nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization and Community Financial Development Institution (CDFI). We provide microloans of $5,000 to $50,000, business coaching, mentoring, advising, support, and education to entrepreneurs who want to start or grow a business in the San Francisco Bay Area. We specifically work with businesses with limited or no access to a bank loan.

The organization was established in 1999 and launched its microenterprise development program in 2005. Working Solutions manages a $3 million microloan fund and has extended $2.3 million in microloans to entrepreneurs with a 98% repayment rate and has educated thousands of entrepreneurs.

Working Solutions headquarters are in San Francisco. However, this specific position will be responsible for launching a new satellite office in San Rafael and serving entrepreneurs throughout Marin County. This employee will be the sole employee working in the San Rafael office. The satellite office is an office within a building that is a new entrepreneurship hub that will house a variety of other nonprofits that work with small businesses as well as a small business incubator. Although Working Solutions has made microloans in Marin County in the past, this will be the first time we will have a physical presence in Marin County. And this is the first satellite office for the organization.

Office Location: Downtown San Rafael, Marin County, CA

Overview of Position: 

The Marin County Business Development Officer will be responsible for:

  • opening a new satellite office in downtown San Rafael and serving Marin County small businesses
  • marketing the microloan program, creating and strengthening strategic partnerships in Marin County
  • packaging and underwriting loans in Marin County
  • presenting completed applications to the Working Solutions Loan Committee which meets in Working Solutions downtown San Francisco office
  • making educational presentations in Marin County to small businesses, bankers, nonprofits, business groups, Chambers of Commerce, etc.
  • providing comprehensive pre-loan and post-loan business coaching and support, connecting businesses with resources

Services will be provided in Spanish and English

This position reports to the Executive Director

Working Solutions Serves these 9 Bay Area Counties: San Francisco, Contra Costa, Alameda, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Marin, Solano, Sonoma, and Napa. However this position will serve just Marin County.

Responsibilities:

  • Marketing to attract new clients -- attend conferences, networking events, and meetings with industry colleagues; give presentations and participate on lender panels
  • Explain loan program to potential clients and screen applicants for eligibility
  • Loan packaging and pre-loan business coaching and support:
    1. Assist business owners to create and refine their business plans and provide additional one-on-one credit assistance in completing an application
    2. Meet with applicants, conduct site visits, request loan application information, and educate business owners about financial management
    3. Refer business owners to other organizations and financial institutions for resources
    4. Analyze personal credit, business cash flow, and business financial projections
    5. Analyze and interpret personal and business financial statements and industry trends
    6. Educate business owner's about personal credit and credit repair
    7. Contact applicant's business references
    8. Create loan summaries, organize loan packages, prepare applicants to make a presentation, and present applications to the volunteer Loan Review Committee
    9. Provide quarterly ongoing post-loan business coaching and support and support to clients
    10. Connect small business clients with mentors

Required Qualifications:

  • Fluency in Spanish and English. (Candidates will be tested for verbal and written fluency.)
  • Financial credit analysis skills and experience making smaller business loans
  • Expert knowledge on reading and understanding small business financial statements and tax returns
  • Experience working directly with small businesses and providing coaching and advice both financial and strategy to small businesses
  • High level of motivation
  • Has strong connections to the Marin County community with bankers, small businesses, business groups, and community nonprofits representatives

  • Enthusiasm for and commitment to the Working Solutions mission, assisting and educating entrepreneurs, serving the small business community, and furthering local economic development goals
  • Enjoys public speaking and has marketing expertise
  • Professional demeanor and excellent customer service skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently in satellite office and work effectively via email and phone with WS staff in the San Francisco office
  • Quick learner who is results oriented, accurate, follows through, pays attention to details, is empathetic, and patient
  • Ability to meet multiple deadlines and prioritize a busy, multifaceted workload

Salary Commensurate with Experience

Considerations: Must have ability to work some irregular hours and must have own transportation.
